Dr. Song performed the cultures to test for potential infections pursuant to my visit and concerns. I have been a patient at this practice for more than 18 years and have seen Dr. Song for most of that time. She has always been knowledgeable, thorough, and I have confidence in her medical care, which is why I have continued to see her for so many years. At my most recent appointment, I shared that I had recently been diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer and would soon be starting chemotherapy. I wasn't expecting counseling or a lengthy conversation, but I did hope for some acknowledgment of what I had just shared. The visit continued in a very matter-of-fact way, and I left feeling that a significant moment in my life had gone unrecognized. I understand that physicians have demanding schedules and care for patients facing difficult diagnoses every day. I also recognize that I don't know what was happening in her day or what she may have been carrying emotionally herself. My intention isn't to criticize her professionalism or her medical care, which I continue to value. I simply wanted to offer the perspective that, especially for long-term patients, a few words of empathy can make an enormous difference. After 18 years of building trust with a physician, even a brief acknowledgment such as "I'm so sorry you're going through this" or "How are you holding up?" would have meant a great deal. Compassion doesn't require extra time—sometimes it's just a few sincere words that remind a patient they're being seen as a person, not just as the next appointment on the schedule.
