Dr. Gumbs was born on the island of Anguilla and grew up on St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands. As part of his schooling, he was required to study Spanish and is now fluent. He attended Brandeis University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1984. Dr. Gumbs graduated from George Washington University School of Medicine in 1988, and joined Maimonides Medical Center and Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, New York to complete his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Gumbs was hired and served as a junior attending at Maimonides, before joining Mansfield Ob/Gyn Associates in 1992. He is board certified and participates in the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology annual board recertification. He has served as the Medical Director of Prenatal Services at Windham Hospital for eight years, and is currently an assistant clinical professor at Yale’s School of Nursing.

Dr. Gumbs is married with five sons and one grandson. His hobbies include traveling, gardening, and preparing West Indian cuisine with his family.
