Mary Johnson is a certified nurse midwife at Southdale OBGYN in Edina and Burnsville. With over 35 years of experience in ambulatory, inpatient and public health settings, Mary is a clinical authority in safe, patient-centered, and holistic health.
After graduating Summa Cum Laude from the College of St. Scholastica in nursing, Mary practiced for a decade before discovering her passion for women’s reproductive health. Her perspective shifted when she had her first child under the guidance of a midwife. Inspired to provide women with the same level of care, she pursued a master’s degree in midwifery at the University of Minnesota.
Mary was drawn to Southdale OBGYN because she felt the providers shared her ideals of holistic wellness. As part of the practice’s initiative to bring women more support during major life transitions, she is helping the clinic establish a variety of group care models. Mary is particularly eager to leverage her NAMS Menopause Practitioner certification and ACNM Advanced Evaluation and Management of Psychiatric Illness in Reproductive Age Women expertise to bring those facing perimenopausal, menopausal and postpartum challenges more resources.
“So many women today feel like they’re alone. With the group care model, they can see firsthand that many other women are experiencing the same issues, and they are truly not alone.”
Outside of work, Mary utilizes her nurturing skill set to enhance her community and the environment. When she’s not reading or spending time with her grandkids, she’s tinkering in one of her many gardens, and training to become a master gardener for the Carver Scott County area.
